Is your PC crawling at a snail's pace? If Task Manager shows 100% disk usage, here are the exact steps to identify the culprit and restore your speed.

The Dreaded Disk Bottleneck

Few things are more frustrating than a computer that freezes every time you click an icon. You open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and see your Disk column glowing red at 100%, even when you aren't doing anything.

# Identify the Culprit

First, click the "Disk" column header to sort by usage. Often, the culprit is SysMain (formerly SuperFetch) or Windows Search.

# Try Disabling SysMain

SysMain attempts to predict which applications you'll open next and pre-loads them into memory. On older HDDs (and sometimes even SSDs), this completely overwhelms the drive.

1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. 2. Scroll down until you find SysMain. 3. Right-click it and select Properties. 4. Change the Startup type to Disabled. 5. Click Stop, then Apply.

# The Real Fix: Upgrade Your Drive

If you are still running Windows 10 or 11 on a mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD), no amount of software tweaking will truly save you. You must upgrade to a Solid State Drive (SSD).

It is the single most impactful upgrade you can make to a computer. Use our Word Counter if you need to draft an email asking your IT department for an SSD!
